April in western Scotland is usually the sunniest month with the least rain. So we’ll look for sun and plan for rain. Daytime highs average 55-60°F (13-15°C) with lows in the mid-40s°F (7°C).

Rain gear is essential. Plan to bring warm socks, waterproof/water resistant shoes, waterproof jacket and pants. A waterproof hat may be helpful in addition to the jacket hood.

A down vest or down sweater, to wear over a sweatshirt and/or sweater and under your rain jacket, works best for comfort. Sturdy close-toed shoes are required. You may want to dress up a bit for visits to the village and other site seeing, but plan for comfort.

Packing List

Suggested clothing items:

  • Sturdy work shoes – hiking boots, work shoes, sturdy athletic shoes. Due to frequent rain, the more water resistant the better.

  • Jeans or long pants of some sort

  • Several long-sleeved and short sleeve shirts, good for layering

  • Sweatshirt, sweaters

  • Down vest and/or down jacket

  • Waterproof windbreaker and/or rain jacket

  • Waterproof work gloves. (Also provided onsite.)

  • Waterproof pants that go over jeans. Can get at REI and other stores.

  • Waterproof hat or hood

Basically, as much waterproof outerwear as possible and clothes to keep you warm. If we're lucky, the sun will come out and we won't need all this, but most likely, we will.

Other items:

  • Personal cosmetics, including soap for shower/tub

  • Laundry detergent, if you don’t like highly scented pods which are available. Laundry sheets work best.

Due to the possibilities of midgies, you may want to pack some insect repellent. April is usually midge free, but as the climate warms, midge season expands.
